Why Writers Should Have Diverse Interests

Hey Writers! I hope you are having a great day. Today I am going to be talking about why we as writers should have diverse interests.

Think about your favorite books, think about the characters. Let’s take Harry Potter as an example (since I know that we have a ton of fangirls out there). The three main characters: Harry loves spending time with his friends, doing fun spells and playing Quidditch, Ron loves eating sweets, and cheering for his favorite Quidditch team, Hermione loves reading, studying and helping her friends. As you can see the characters have diverse interests.

J.K Rowling could not have created such characters without putting in a little bit of herself into every one of them. She could not have written such an amazing story without having experienced new things. As growing writers we need to get out there, take risks and do new things. When you get out in the world and really look at it, notice small details, it will bring your writing to a whole new level. I guarantee you that you will not regret it. I know that all writers like to do something other than writing. Some of my hobbies other than writing are doing arts and crafts, playing the piano, listening to music, traveling and blogging.

Back in March me and my family went to Redwood Forest, California. It was so beautiful and inspiring. Something sparked inside me, an idea! As I thought about it, it grew and I’ve started planning it. Ideas don’t come out of nowhere, they come out of experience and adventure.

You’re painting and when you finish, you look at it and think “Hey! That would be a really nice book cover!” or you’re practicing your instrument, and you listen to this piece which sounds like a perfect theme song for the story you are writing. Inspiration comes from trying new things.

I hope you writers take this as a lesson and go into the world and try new things. You are capable of things you didn’t even know of. Have great experiences and if they don’t go well, learn from them. Your experience may just turn out to be one of the most beautiful moments of your life.
